Background: born Dayton, OH, childhood New York City; education: Columbia University and Columbia Medical School; career: internist at Lenox Hill Hospital and New York Hospital; Coast Guard Medical Corps service; 9/11: preparation for a major catastrophe at the hospital, little for doctors to do in wake of event; post-9/11: desire to leave city, loss of friends and acquaintances, somber mood of city; fear of future terrorism threat, disagreement with response of George W. Bush administration, concern for loss of civil liberties; change in hospital protocols, nasal swabs for anthrax, post-traumatic stress disorder in patient population, severe acute respiratory syndrome [SARS] epidemic, bio-terrorism; perception of diminishing acute trauma, concern that memory of 9/11 has been misused in the context of military action
