Background: born Michigan; TriBeCa resident; education: graduate work Adelphi University, postdoctoral work psychoanalysis New York University; 9/11: sound of North Tower plane impact, wife and son's close vicinity to World Trade Center, television coverage, sound of tower collapse, use of particle mask, power outage, leaving TriBeCa apartment, volunteer service; post-9/11: comparisons to World War II, response of and explanation to children; police escorts, support of rescue workers, work of Board of Education, experience with Red Cross; concern about air quality, role of proximity in relationship to event; reflections on U.S. isolationism and national self-congratulation; criticism of media coverage; nature and treatment of trauma, power of dissociation.
