Background: born Chelsea, MA; childhood La Jolla, CA and Rochester, NY; raised Catholic, now practicing Muslim; education: B.A. Barnard College 1986, M.A. Brown University; career: teacher at Marymount School, Sheepshead Bay High School, Bronx High School of Science, Assistant Principal of Social Studies Stuyvesant High School; 9/11: kids at window and televisions on, principal's cabinet meeting, students trying to phone family members, evacuation of campus buildings, walk to Chelsea Piers, confusion regarding nature of attack; post-9/11: increased nervous on the subway; experience of anti-Arab harassment; curriculum on Afghanistan and Islamic beliefs at Stuyvesant, patriotism and censorship, student and teacher counseling.
