Background: born Vienna, Austria; childhood and education Prague, Czechoslovakia; memories of Nazi occupation 1938-1939; imprisonment at Linden bei Deutschbrod labor camp October 1941; deportation to Theresienstadt 1943, description of intellectual culture among prisoners; deportation to Auschwitz 1944; deportation to Kaufering camp 1944, description of work and conditions; 9/11: witness to burning buildings from Brooklyn, ashes reminiscent of Holocaust; concern with political manipulation of tragedy, fear of totalitarian resurgence, discussion of far-right politics, religious fundamentalism and the invasion of Iraq.
