Born Cleveland, OH; education: University of the Pacific, Ling Nan University, University of Denver, Union Theological Seminary; activism: Draft Act 1940, prison experiences, member of Fellowship of Reconciliation in Chicago, anti-discrimination protests, formation of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), Executive Secretary of CORE for ten years, sit-in tactics, first Freedom Rides on inter-state buses 1947-1949, involvement in American Committee on Africa, work on Defiance Campaign and Americans for South African Resistance
