Background: born New York, NY in 1937; education: B.A., Yale University, 1959; M.A. Fletcher School of Diplomacy, Tufts University, 1960; career: National Security Council planning staff 1969-1973; Director of State Department Policy Planning Staff, 1973-1977; President, Council on Foreign Relations, 1977-1985; U.S. Ambassador China, 1985-1989; Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, 1993-1997; Council on Foreign Relations (CFR): member in 1973, initial ideas and goals upon becoming president in 1985, increasing membership, thoughts in the 1980s project, reflections on world affairs during his CFR presidency, CFR president expression of views, convening power of CFR, reminiscences of visits from world leaders, controversy surrounding Kissinger at CFR.
