Biographical Note

Atlantic Philanthropies was founded by businessman Charles F. (Chuck) Feeney in 1982. Atlantic Philanthropies gave to support activities in five major areas: aging; children and youth; health; human rights and reconciliation; and knowledge, research, and innovation. In 1984, Atlantic acquired Feeney's stake in the Duty Free Shoppers Group. Feeney remained anonymous until his identity was revealed in a New York Times article in 1997. Believing in the idea of "Giving While Living," Feeney announced to the Board of Directors in 1999 that he wanted to spend down the foundation in twenty to thirty years. In 2016 grantmaking was concluded, with the goal of ending the foundation's activities in 2020.

Scope and Contents

The first phase of the project contains interviews with 139 individuals, including the leadership of Atlantic Philanthropies, business associates of Chuck Feeney, institutional partners, and grantees. Interviews were focused on documenting Feeney's life, the establishment of Atlantic Philanthropies, and Feeney's philosophy of "Giving While Living." In the second phase, 85 individuals were interviewed. Phase II built upon themes of Phase I, with additional focus on new institutions and partners and the unique challenges associated with spending to close out the foundation. During Phase II, interviewers focused on three topics: enhancing understanding of the long-term effects of Atlantic's grantmaking, analyzing Atlantic's impact and effectiveness, and capturing the impact of Atlantic's model on the broader field of strategic philanthropy.
