Background: born Antwerp, Belgium, move to Netherlands at age five; childhood: attending Dutch schools, importance of education, fond memories, respecting parents; World War II [WWII]: arrival of Germans in 1940, Dutch Jews sent to Germany, hiding in The Hague, separation from family, parents death in Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp; experiences in Auschwitz, liberation by Dutch soldier in US Army; post-WWII: emotional trauma from Holocaust, relating September 11th to Holocaust, reading of letter written to doctor in Holland in 1984
