Education: Athens High School, Athens, Texas (1955); BA, Texas A&M (1959); medical school at Texas Southwestern Medical School (1963); involvement with Texas Liberal Democratic Party, the Unitarian Church, and the National Abortion Federation; trouble with family regarding political stance on abortion; discussion of heavy demand for abortion services; adolescent experience with girl ostracized due to pregnancy; conversion to Unitarianism; involvement with the Clergy Consultation Network; pre-Roe v. Wade fears of blackmail from deceitful and desperate patients; frustration at medical community over lack of abortion education; fears regarding the future of pro-choice legislation
