Early life: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; family background: parents' immigration from Ukraine, parents' careers as pharmacists; education: Ursinus College from 1947-1951, Jefferson medical College from 1952-1956, Internship at Harbor General Hospital in 1957, Residency at Kaiser Hospital in Los Angeles from 195701960, Senior Lecturer in Africa in 1968, Masters in Public Health from University of California at Berkeley in 1972; personal experience with botched abortion at age 18, research in medical school, treatment during internship, residency, and practice at Kaiser from 1960-1968 and 1969-1976; performing illegal home abortions, bypassing legalities in interest of patients, performing legal abortions in private practice until retirement in 1992; pre- and post-Roe v. Wade; descriptions of wife's abortion, grandmother's death from abortion, first illegal abortion performed, patients suffering from botched abortions
