Background and childhood: born 1912 in New Orleans, youth in Chicago; education: high school; career: bassist for Stuff Smith Trio and George Shearing Quintet, first show "Free Sounds" produced at Apollo in 1963, manager of George Shearing Quintet and Cannonball Adderley Quintet; discussion of book Men, Women, and Girl Singers; commentary on women, race and race relations; reminiscences of interactions with Apollo performers, underworld of music business.
